Bay of Bengal Depression Intensifies into Cyclonic Storm 'Murasu'; Coastal Alerts Raised

BHUBANESWAR / VISAKHAPATNAM — Meteorological authorities in New Delhi and regional disaster headquarters across eastern India issued urgent coastal warnings on Sunday as a deep atmospheric depression over the central Bay of Bengal rapidly intensified into Cyclonic Storm 'Murasu'.

Satellite observations confirmed sustained surface wind speeds exceeding 85 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 105 km/h as the storm tracked north-northwestward over exceptionally warm sea-surface waters. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) projected that Murasu will make landfall along the coastal corridor between southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh by Tuesday morning, bringing severe storm surges and torrential precipitation.

"We have preemptively deployed twenty-eight National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) battalions and opened over four hundred cyclone shelters along the low-lying coastal belt," declared Odisha's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister.

Projected Path and Emergency Measures

  1. Evacuation Mandate: Fisherfolk have been strictly prohibited from venturing into deep waters, while mechanized trawlers were ordered back to safe anchorage.
  2. Crop Protection Protocols: Agricultural extension officers advised coastal paddy farmers to harvest mature crops immediately to minimize flood damage.
  3. Port Operations: Visual storm signals have been hoisted at Paradip, Dhamra, and Visakhapatnam commercial maritime ports.
