Independent Journalism Under Duress as Egyptian Court Fines Editor Lina Attalah
CAIRO — An Egyptian economic tribunal handed down hefty financial penalties on Sunday against Lina Attalah, editor-in-chief of the acclaimed independent news organization Mada Masr, alongside orders temporarily restricting the platform's digital publishing licenses.
The decision has drawn swift condemnation from international human rights bodies, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and European diplomatic missions, who described the proceedings as an effort to silence rigorous investigative reporting on domestic economic mismanagement and regional border security.
