Emergency Response Mobilized as Fire Sweeps High-Altitude Lodge Along Everest Route
NAMCHE BAZAAR / KATHMANDU — A major structural fire broke out on Sunday in the high-altitude Himalayan village of Dingboche, situated at 4,400 meters along the standard approach route to Mount Everest Base Camp.
Fanned by dry, freezing alpine gales, flames rapidly engulfed a prominent stone-and-timber trekking lodge. Local Sherpa community members, assisted by international mountaineering guides and trekking teams, formed bucket chains using melted glacial runoff to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighboring stone dwellings. Nepalese civil aviation helicopters were placed on standby in Lukla to evacuate any individuals suffering from smoke inhalation.
